Why is It So Hard To Lose Weight

During my research, I learned that there are four major reasons why those in their late 30s, 40s, 50s and older aren’t able to achieve their fitness goals.

Actually, I should say there are five reasons – with the first being the decision to follow workout programs and fad diets that are filled with incorrect information and simply don’t work.

I touched on this before but it bears repeating – there are a lot of myths and outright lies that exist in the fitness industry.

These lies can cause you to lose money and valuable time pursuing results that you are never going to be able to achieve with the weight loss programs being offered.

These programs have you work out hard and following the wrong exercises and can send your frustration levels soaring. Plus — these plans don’t help combat the challenges of an aging body!

So, now let’s look at those four major reasons why older men and women aren’t able to achieve their health and fitness goals.

Reason #1: The Belly Fat Hormone

While you never want fat hanging around your waist, for most people over 40 it’s often the first place it goes and the last place it leaves when you gain a few pounds. But, a lot of people knows that as the “belly fat hormone” which is cortisol, a stress hormone that is released by our adrenal glands.

Recent studies have shown that cortisol increases appetite and signals the body to shift metabolism to store fat. 

In other words, normal levels of cortisol are crucial for health, but too much cortisol from stress, overtraining, poor sleep, and bad eating habits can wreak hormonal havoc on your health and waistline. 

Pro Tip: Next time you follow a workout program make sure it’s designed to reduce cortisol in your body, so you don’t waste months of your life trying to build muscle and achieving the flat stomach you desire.

Reason #2: Slow Recovery Time & Injuries 
Here’s what we want men and women over forty to know: A lot of fitness plans out there can put your body at risk.

They often prescribe exercises that put your shoulders and knees in unsafe positions, heavy lifts that result in slow-healing injuries, and workout plans that strain your body.

Instead of getting results, you get exhausted. Plus — these plans don’t help combat the challenges of an aging body!  

In other words, it’s critical to follow a program that takes these factors into consideration and ensures that you are always warmed up and ready to go before doing any intense work.

Pro Tip: The reason that general workout programs leaves you in pain and causes you to take days to recover is most likely not adapted for your age and body limitations! You need a workout program designed for your age, period.
Reason #3: Low Testosterone & Early Menopause

For men, testosterone levels tend to peak during adolescence and early adulthood. Those levels typically decline by about 1 percent each year, starting around age 30. 

But in some cases, you may experience declining testosterone at a younger age—especially with physical inactivity, poor sleep and too much stress.

For women heading to menopause, the estrogen production declines and accelerates bone loss. This is why you can expect up to a 30% decline in bone mass in your 50s if you skip exercise. 

Pro Tip: To boost hormone production to look and feel younger, men and women should follow a specific workout program that focus on anti-aging exercises that promote youthfulness.

Even then it wasn’t the smartest thing to do but now it can be downright dangerous. That’s because as we get older we tend to have more inflammation in our body. That means it’s easier to get nagging injuries like tendonitis, knee pain and backaches.

It’s critical to follow a program that takes these factors into consideration and ensures that you are always warmed up and ready to go before doing any intense work.

  • That’s why weight training is so important as we age. Without it, your muscles will atrophy and lose mass. That means even if you've never done strength training before, now is the time to start. 
  • Plus, the right strength training also burns calories and increases metabolism, so adding this rule is like getting a double boost in fat-burning.
  • But don’t worry, you are NOT going to have to spend hours each day at the gym. The truth is that the workouts that you did in your twenties aren’t the most effective way to get your 40-plus body fit again. And that’s why I’ve used all my training experience and knowledge to put together perfectly balanced workouts designed for your age, body limitations and fitness goals.

Rule #2: Practice Smart Nutrition
  • One of the big problems with weight loss gimmicks, scams, supplements and fad diets is they don’t deliver sustainable results.
  • Most people fail at losing weight and getting into great physical shape because they don’t have a solid foundation or a system in place. Each day they try to eat as little as they can while their energy plummets and their willpower wanes.
